2024 Gear Preview: Deuter Alproof Tour 38+5/36+5 SL Airbag Pack

2024 Gear Preview: Deuter Alproof Tour 38+5/36+5 SL Airbag Pack

We haven’t tried it yet, but we’re thrilled that Deuter added a bigger size to their popular Alproof airbag pack—38 liter unisex or 36 liter women’s (SL stands for “slim line”)—that addresses the need for a larger carrying capacity for multi-day tours. The pack includes Deuter’s award-winning Alpride E2 avalanche airbag system, which uses a supercapacitor to charge its electronic system. The electronic systems are fast-acting, can deploy multiple times on a single charge, are easier to travel with, are relatively lightweight, and are less affected by low temperatures.

Aside from the airbag system, this pack exhibits Deuter’s consistently thoughtful and intuitive engineering. Our favorite features are the roll top can extend to create 5 additional liters of storage (hence the +5), the hydration sleeve that has an insulated pocket in the strap, a dedicated shovel and probe pocket with a bright orange zipper to differentiate it, a leg strap to ensure the pack stays on in the event of an avalanche, and a three-way zipper that opens the entire pack up like a clam shell. It has ski- or splitboard-carry straps for either A-frame or diagonal, and a mesh helmet-carry bag tucks discreetly away when not in use.
